I remember reading an interview with the creators in a PC Gamer magazine right around the time it was released. The interviewer asked them precisely this question, why is the camera so close in this game, with no ability to zoom out.Basically, the answer had two parts: First, they didn't really feel that you needed to zoom out any further to play well. Second, they had spent so much time on the maps and models that they wanted you close enough to see and appreciate them. When War3 debuted, it was the best looking RTS ever.

It still holds up pretty well.You have to remember, when War3 first came out, they were almost no other 3D RTS games. Most at that time were still using sprites. Early in development, War3 had little to no base building, and focused more on the hero and his party. When the game engine was built, it was with that type of gameplay in mind.Don't get me wrong, I would definitely love to zoom all the way out, but I understand the reasons you can't. But when Warcraft 4 comes out, I'll be disappointed if the camera is so restrictive.

That's not entirely true. Black and White came out a year before and the zoom worked perfectly. You could zoom in to a human's foot, out to the entire world, and everything in between.

And it was fully 3D.War 3 was supposed to be about heroes fighting heroes. The unit cap was far too low (75 instead of the 200 we loved on SC). The zoom was annoyingly too tight because the designers had a case of stupid and thought we wanted to play small unit skirmish fights and dick with their ponderous heroes mechanic.

I was joking, i own a 21:9 screen and its just stupid to think that you will be in a disadvantage without it.Also 21:9 screens can be bought for 250$ if you can live with 29 inch and 1080p. Sorry I didn't pick up the sarcasm:xBut yeah we might as well say no laptop support because people on a desktop have an unfair advantage.Well, when you can see monsters that are typically 'offscreen' on a normal 16:9 screen, then you know ahead of time what's coming. Hell, you could play a caster on D3 and shoot mobs well off the screen a lot easier with a ultrawide monitor.Anything that's RTS, top down, having more real estate to see more real estate, gives you the upper hand in almost all situations within that game genre.But it's a hardware version of a FOV option on the software side.

Warcraft 3 by todays standards is an old game, but it is still popular. Larger monitors, 21' or larger, have native resolutions that are not supported by Warcraft 3. There is, of course, a way to force Warcraft 3 (both Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne) to run in a high or widescreen resolution.

The 'resolution' you chose in windows just made everything smaller on screen so you could fit more stuff in view.

Very different from true resolution we see nowadays.
